GABRIELS, P., SNIEDER, . and NOLET, G. 1987, In Situ Measurement of Shear-Wave Velocity in Sediments with Higher-Mode Rayleigh Waves, 35,187-196. A seismic survey was carried out on a tidal flat in the SW-Netherlands in order to determine shear-wave velocities in sediments by means of higher-mode Rayleigh waves. The dispersion properties of these Rayleigh waves were measured in the 2-D amplitude spectrum-or f,k-spectrum-and resulted in phase velocities for six different modes as a function of frequency (5-30 Hz). These observed phase velocities were inverted for a nine-layer model for the shear-wave velocity to a depth of 50 m.

Problem of Rayleigh Wave Propagation in Thermoelastic Diffusion
In this work, the problem of Rayleigh wave propagation is considered in the context of the theory of thermoelastic diffusion. The formulation is applied to a homogeneous isotropic thermoelastic half space with mass diffusion at the stress free, isothermal, isoconcentrated boundary. Using the potential functions and harmonic wave solution, three coupled dilatational waves and a shear wave is obt...
متن کاملSensitivity of Near-Surface Shear-Wave Velocity Determination from Rayleigh and Love Waves
Rayleigh and Love waves recorded on seismic-shot gathers can be used to determine the thickness and shear-wave velocity of shallow subsurface layers. After the data are transformed into the k-f domain, the dispersion curve for each of the phases can be picked from maxima on the contour plot. This dispersion curve is then inverted for the velocities and depths. Different frequencies in the dispe...
متن کاملGlobal anisotropic phase velocity maps for higher mode Love and Rayleigh waves
S U M M A R Y It is well established that the Earth’s uppermost mantle is anisotropic, but there are no clear observations of anisotropy in the deeper parts of the mantle. Surface waves are well suited to observe anisotropy since they carry information about both radial and azimuthal anisotropy. Fundamental mode surface waves, for commonly used periods up to 200 s, are sensitive to structure in...
متن کاملA Nunerical Investigation of Head Waves and Leaky Modes in Fluid-filled Boreholes
Although synthetic borehole seismograms routinely can be computed for a wide range of borehole conditions, the physical nature of shear and compressional head waves in fluid-filled boreholes is poorly understood. This paper presents a series of numerical experiments designed to provide insight into the physical mechanisms controlling head wave propagation in boreholes. These calculations demons...
متن کاملDetermination of Shear Wave Velocity and Attenuation from Waveforms in Low Velocity Formations
In boreholes where formation shear velocity is lower than borehole tluid velocity neither refracted shear waves nor pseudo-Rayleigh waves can propagate. When frequency response of the sonde does not extend to low frequencies (e.g. 2 kHz) Stoneley waves are not excited efficiently. In such cases refracted P, leaking modes (PL) and tluid waves become dominant phases on a full waveform acoustic lo...
